Sierra Vista Jr. High School is a member of the California Junior Scholarship Federation, Chapter #257jsc. This state-wide honor society was founded in 1967. It is a subgroup of CSF, the high school honor society founded in 1921 by a school administrator, Mr. Charles F. Seymour. The purpose of the society is to provide those students who excel academically the encouragement to perform school and community services, and to participate in worthwhile activities. Students, who receive at least 16 grade points from the grades of the previous two quarters from their 4 academic classes (math, English, social studies, and Science) may apply for membership (an "A" is valued at 3 points, a "B" is 1 point, and a "C" is 0 points.) Membership in the Sierra Vista Honor Society is held in high esteem, and our staff encourages all eligible students to join.
Students must apply for CJSF Honor Society each semester. Students in 7th grade are eligible to apply starting with the spring semester of 7th grade.
Each semester, members elect officers who help with various functions, including the installation ceremonies. Honor Society members also have the opportunity to participate in educational field trips during the year.
Frequently Asked Questions regarding Honor Society
What is Honor Society?
Our Honor Society is the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF). We meet several times each semester during lunch time.
Why join CJSF?
CJSF gives students an opportunity to receive recognition for their good grades and community service at our installation ceremonies. We go on a fun, educational field trip each semester. Also, it’s a good idea to be in the habit of getting good grades, performing community service, and making deadlines for continuing with CSF in high school where college scholarship opportunities are available.
Who is allowed to join?
8th graders may join at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. 7th graders may join only at the beginning of spring semester. Students must apply each semester for membership.
How do you qualify?
Receive at least 16 grade points from the grades of the previous two quarters from your 4 academic classes (math, English, social studies, and science.) An "A" is valued at 3 points, a "B" is 1 point, and a "C" is 0 points. Disciplinary issues, and Failing grades or "D"s are not allowed in any class (including P.E. and your elective). Students must also meet the application deadline. Absolutely no late applications are accepted.
Does it cost anything to join?
We request a donation of $3.00 membership dues to help with administration costs of the program. Dues are collected at the first meeting each semester.
What about service hours?
Ten hours of community service are also expected and must be completed (or arranged) by the first meeting date. For the fall semester, service hours may have been performed from February to September. Remember, our motto is “Scholarship for Service.”
Where can a student get an application?
Applications are available at the SV Library starting in August for the fall semester, and December for the spring semester.
When are the applications due?
The deadline for turning in the application for the spring semester of 2016 is Friday, February 5th, 2016, by 2:30 p.m. to the SV Library. Please note, ABSOLUTELY NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED per our charter rules.
