* Relay for Jack benefiting Jack's Angels Foundation. After losing her son at the age of 3 to a pediatric brain stem tumor, Janet Demeter founded Jack's Angels to raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research. On May 28th, Jack's Angels will host their first annual Relay for Jack. We are in need of student volunteers (they will receive community service hours). Following Hart District approval, a flyer will be available. For more information about Jack's Angels and Relay for Jack please contact Janet Demeter 818-400-2724 or visit www.relayforjack.org.

*Donate clothing, linens and gently used shoes of any kind (cleats, baby shoes, work shoes), to Ms. Kontis, room 626 and earn hours for community service. Each medium size bag of clothes/linens equals one hour and every five pairs of shoes will earn on hour as well. The donations benefit the homeless and assisting them with getting jobs, etc.

All of our city volunteer opportunities require online sign-up. Parents must sign-up for a Rec1 account (our online system - https://secure.rec1.com/CA/city-santa-clarita/Volunteer/2593c) and then add their child to their account. Then they could sign-up their child for an event and accept the waivers on their behalf. Click HERE for a list of spring 2014 volunteering events.

*In September, Dave Rosenberg, the Teen Services Librarian at the Canyon Country Library, will be starting a Teen Advisory Board (TAB) to give input and assist with Teen programming. This is an excellent way for the students to volunteer while gaining leadership experience. The TAB members won’t just talk about programming or materials they would like at the public library--they will strategize and work together to make it happen! Teen Advisory Board meetings will be once a month on Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at the Canyon Country Library. Students will be asked to make a minimum time commitment for each semester. *New Leash on Life (in Placerita Cyn.)- Youth volunteers may be able to help socialize, walk and groom the dogs at their E.R.A. Center with a guardian or parent present at all times. Click HERE for more info.
*Valencia Public Library has a Teen Advisory Board for grades 7th-12th. Meets the first Tuesday of the month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Valencia Public Library. New members are always welcome. Contact Karen Cruze for more information at [email protected]
* Assist teachers at any school. Many students like to visit their former elementary school teachers and volunteer there. Get permission from the teacher before you visit the elementary school.
* Charitable work at places of worship, scouting, Food Pantry, etc. are also accepted.
* Book donations may also count towards hours. 10 NEW books = 1 hour. Books may be of any reading level from preschool to adult. They MUST be in clean, new condition. You may turn them in to the SV library or a public library with the librarian's verification signature.
